Mid-Sha'ban 2027 is expected to begin on Saturday, January 23, 2027. Live countdown, dates through 2030, and how the date is determined.

Mid-Sha'ban (Arabic: نصف شعبان, romanized: niṣf šaʿbān or ليلة نصف مِن شعبان laylat niṣf min šaʿbān "night on the half of Sha'ban") is an Islamic holiday observed by Shia and Sunni Muslims on the eve of 15th of Sha'ban (the night following the sunset on the 14th day of the eighth month of the Islamic calendar). In Twelver Shia Islam, it is particularly significant as the birthday of Muhammad al-Mahdi, the twelfth Imam, traditionally believed to have been born on 15 Sha'ban 255 AH (868 CE). The night is marked by prayers, supplications, charity, and religious gatherings. Some communities also celebrate a similar holiday on this night called Shab-e-barat (lit. 'Barat Night') or Laylat al-Bara’ah (Arabic: ليلة البراءة). It is celebrated in many South Asian, Central Asian, Southeast Asian and Middle Eastern countries. Mid-Sha'ban (Laylat al-Bara'at) is observed on the night of 15 Sha'ban.

Dates follow the Umm al-Qura calculation and may shift by a day when the crescent moon is sighted.

Why does the date move?

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is purely lunar — twelve lunar months totalling about 354 days — so every Islamic date arrives roughly 11 days earlier each civil year, cycling through all seasons over about 33 years. Dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calculation; in many communities the final date is confirmed only by the physical sighting of the new crescent moon, so observances can shift by a day.
