Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى, romanized: ʿĪd al-ʾAḍḥā, lit. 'Feast of the Sacrifice') is the second of the two main festivals in Islam, alongside Eid al-Fitr. It falls on the 10th of Dhu'l-Hijja, the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar. Celebrations and observances are generally carried forward to the three following days, known as the Tashreeq days. Eid al-Adha falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, during the Hajj pilgrimage.

Why does the date move?

The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is purely lunar — twelve lunar months totalling about 354 days — so every Islamic date arrives roughly 11 days earlier each civil year, cycling through all seasons over about 33 years. Dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calculation; in many communities the final date is confirmed only by the physical sighting of the new crescent moon, so observances can shift by a day.
