Ashura (Arabic: عَاشُورَاء, ʿĀshūrāʾ [ʕaːʃuːˈraːʔ]), also more formally as the Day of Ashura (Arabic: يوم عاشوراء, romanized: Yawm ʿĀshūrāʾ), is a day of commemoration in Islam. It occurs annually on the tenth of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar. For Shia Muslims, Ashura is a day of mourning as they annually commemorate the death of Husayn, grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad and the third Shia Imam. Husayn's suffering and martyrdom are viewed by Muslims a symbol of sacrifice in the struggle for right against wrong, and for justice and truth against injustice and falsehood. Husayn and his companions are regarded as martyrs by all Muslim denominations. Ashura falls on 10 Muharram.

Why does the date move?
The Islamic (Hijri) calendar is purely lunar — twelve lunar months totalling about 354 days — so every Islamic date arrives roughly 11 days earlier each civil year, cycling through all seasons over about 33 years. Dates here follow the Umm al-Qura calculation; in many communities the final date is confirmed only by the physical sighting of the new crescent moon, so observances can shift by a day.
