The Feast of Corpus Christi (Ecclesiastical Latin: Dies Sanctissimi Corporis et Sanguinis Domini Iesu Christi, lit. 'The Day of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Jesus Christ the Lord'), also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, is a liturgical solemnity celebrating the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist; the feast is observed by the Catholic Church, in addition to certain Western Orthodox, Lutheran, and Anglican churches. Nine weeks earlier, the institution of the Eucharist at the Last Supper is observed on Maundy Thursday in a sombre atmosphere leading to Good Friday. The liturgy on that day also commemorates Christ's washing of the disciples' feet, the institution of the priesthood, and the agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. Corpus Christi falls 60 days after Easter, on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday.

Why does the date move?

The Christian year mixes two kinds of dates. Fixed feasts like Christmas and Epiphany fall on the same calendar day every year. Movable feasts — Easter and everything anchored to it, from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost — are set by a lunar rule: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21. Orthodox churches apply the same rule on the older Julian calendar, which is why Orthodox Easter and Christmas usually differ from the Western dates.
