It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles of Jesus, Mary, and other followers of Christ, while they were in Jerusalem celebrating the Feast of Weeks, as described in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1–31). Why does the date move?

The Christian year mixes two kinds of dates. Fixed feasts like Christmas and Epiphany fall on the same calendar day every year. Movable feasts — Easter and everything anchored to it, from Ash Wednesday to Pentecost — are set by a lunar rule: Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after March 21. Orthodox churches apply the same rule on the older Julian calendar, which is why Orthodox Easter and Christmas usually differ from the Western dates.
