Rosh Hashanah 2026 begins on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Live countdown, dates through 2030, and how the date is determined.

Rosh Hashanah (Hebrew: רֹאשׁ הַשָּׁנָה, pronounced [ˌʁoʃ haʃaˈna]; lit. 'head of the year') is the New Year in Judaism. The biblical name for this holiday is Yom Teruah (יוֹם תְּרוּעָה, Yōm Tərūʿā, IPA: [joːm təruːˈʕaː]; lit. 'day of blasting'). It is the first of the High Holy Days (יָמִים נוֹרָאִים, Yāmīm Nōrāʾīm; lit. 'Days of Awe'), as specified by Leviticus 23:23–25, that occur in the late summer/early autumn of the Northern Hemisphere. Rosh Hashanah begins the Ten Days of Repentance, culminating in Yom Kippur, the day of atonement. It is followed by the festival of Sukkot, which is immediately followed by Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah, which end this holiday season. Rosh Hashanah begins on 1 Tishrei, the first day of the Hebrew year.

Why does the date move?

Jewish holidays are fixed in the Hebrew calendar, which is lunisolar: months follow the moon, and a leap month is added seven times every nineteen years to stay aligned with the seasons. Because Hebrew years are 353–385 days long, each holiday drifts within a roughly month-wide window of the civil calendar. All Jewish holidays begin at sundown on the evening before the date shown.
